The Cairns Cup set for San Roque in 2026

The Cairns Cup, a matchplay event pitting disabled golfers from Europe against their counterparts from the USA, is set to return in 2026 at San Roque Club in Spain.

Founded by Huddersfield-based Kevin Booth and Wigan-based Ian Halliwell, the biennial competition has become a symbol of camaraderie, sportsmanship and inclusivity in adaptive golf since the idea came about at the 2018 Phoenix Cup.

Named in honour of Billy Cairns from Kilmarnock, who passed away the day before the 2018 Phoenix Cup, the Ryder Cup-style event has been played at some of golf’s most famous venues – including The Shire London in 2022 and Cherry Creek Golf Club in Michigan in 2024, where the US won by just one point.

Thanks to the support of sponsors and donors, the event continues to be financially accessible, ensuring players are selected based on ability and merit.

“This event is about so much more than just golf,” said Kevin. “It’s about giving every player, regardless of their financial situation, the chance to compete at the highest level, forming lifelong friendships, and proving that disability is no barrier to sporting excellence.”

The 2026 teams will be captained by Kris Aves (Europe) and Greg Hooper (USA).
