Michael Sowerby and Ashton Turner win the PGA Fourball Championship

Alwoodley-based Michael Sowerby teamed up with Kenwick Park’s Ashton Turner to win the PGA Fourball Championship at Cumberwell Park.

Michael and Ashton led the field with a 28 under-par total over three days – shooting rounds of 63, 61 and 61 to win by two as Brandon Meads (Billericay) and Sebastian Lovell (Bedfordshire) finished second.

“We’ve really enjoyed our week,” Michael told The PGA after collecting the trophy. “I hadn’t thought about winning until we had about five holes to go; it was just two mates out there playing golf and enjoying ourselves. We were following the scores, and we thought going round the turn we needed to make a few. We just had to keep doing what we were doing.”

“There were some nerves down the stretch, we knew we were in a decent position,” added Ashton. “Those nerves are a good thing, and it was great to be in the team environment and have someone there to help chill out.”

On the final day, Michael and Ashton played holes seven through 12 in seven under-par – having played the stretch in five under-par on day one and six under-par on day two. They then added birdies on the par three 13th and par four 17th to lift the trophy.

“We played that stretch really well all week,” added Ashton. “That was vital on this course as it’s a simple stretch compared to the other areas of the golf course – it’s where you needed to make your score.”
