Northern Golfer #102 (Aug/Sept 2023) out now

The August/September 2023 edition of Northern Golfer is available in golf clubs and retailers across the region now

It may have been a bit wet and windy in the last couple of months, but that hasn’t put a damper on our region’s golfers, who’ve been performing brilliantly at local, national and international events once again.

With our new bi-monthly publishing schedule, we knew our summer editions would be packed, and there’s a lot to get through this month! From wins for PGA professionals in tournaments and pro ams to top amateurs winning county events, we’ve got lots of local coverage throughout Teeing Off. We’ve also got big national wins – including Charlotte Naughton’s second national title. In our first catch-up with the Baker family this edition, Jess shares her experience at the US Women’s Open at Pebble Beach. We’ve also got club news and back-to-back Ladies European Tour Access Series events at Ramside Hall to catch up on.

Our columnists once again share their expertise and experiences too – including Chris Paisley on finding his flow, Chris Simmons on caddying for local hero Matt Jordan at Hoylake, and Simon Olver on the regular practices which get our courses into the best possible condition. We’ve also caught up with Shawn O’Neil on fitness, and Doug Brolls on putting.

My preparation for the cover interview with Rhys Thompson was changed twice in short order as he won his second, and then third, events on this season’s Tartan Pro Tour. It was great to see Rhys win and then have the chance to relive those successes with him at Slaley Hall as he gears up for the final stages of the 2023 season, and sets his sights on moving up to the Challenge Tour in 2024.

Meanwhile, we’ve also paid a visit to Stocksfield Golf Club for our Course Profile; enjoyed a game with Steve Baker in A Round With; and put together the latest Gear news. We’ve also got all the latest from this year’s Match Play Pairs tournament, which has reached the quarter-finals.

The biggest event in the region in 2023 takes place in August, with global stars heading to Close House to compete in the $2million International Series England. The best players from the Asian Tour will be joined by LIV players – including Close House-based Lee Westwood, and major champions Graeme McDowell and Patrick Reed – as well as local favourites, including qualifiers Rhys, James Wilson and Will Marshall. We’ll see you at Close House for what is sure to be a memorable four days of competition on the Colt Course.

Enjoy the final part of the season, we’ll be back in October with another packed edition.
