A round with… Dylan Yau

When he’s not modelling for one of the biggest names in fashion or golf, you’ll often find dylan yau on a golf course at home in the north east – join us for a round to find out more about his game, where he loves to play, and who’s in his dream fourball

Model Dylan Yau has worked with some of the world’s biggest brands, from Adidas to Louis Vuitton. Having started modelling when he was 18, when he’s not working in high-end fashion you may see him in golf gear for brands including Galvin Green, Lyle & Scott and online retailer Function18. Having taken up the game during lockdown, the Newcastle-born 28-year-old can also be found on golf courses across the region regularly – particularly at his home club, Close House, where we caught up with him for a round…

How much golf do you get to play?
I’m lucky to have a busy diary of work and travelling to some amazing locations. When I’m not away working, in the gym or spending time with my fiancé, I’ll probably have a golf club in my hands. I’ll practice or play every day when I’m at home and have some great friends who play a lot as well. I’ve been playing for nearly four years now and my handicap is down to eight.

How did you get into golf?
My dad has played golf for as long as I can remember. He always wanted me to pick it up, but when I was younger I played rugby at a high level. As I got older, I watched a bit of golf and then during lockdown I got into playing it on the PS4. Once lockdown ended and golf opened up before anything else, I got some clubs and was hooked instantly.

Which is your favourite course in the North East?
I love being a member of Close House and enjoy the challenge of the Colt course. It’s tough, but when you play well it’s amazing. I always enjoy a game at Tyneside on the other side of the Tyne Valley too, and like Dunstanburgh Castle for a bit of a change.

And further afield?
I like Emirates Golf Club in Dubai, but my favourite course is Turnberry. I played it as part of a Galvin Green shoot and while I didn’t play very well, I loved every minute of it.

What’s your best score?
I’ve shot three over-par at Tyneside, which might explain why it’s one of my favourite courses.

Which is your favourite golfing memory?
Playing Turnberry while I was still relatively new to golf blew my mind. We did some work then played the course and the weather was just perfect.

What about your most embarrassing moments on the course?
Playing in my first ever pro am, I got there a bit late and there were loads of people watching on the first tee. I topped it exactly two yards. Once you’ve done that, it’s hard to get embarrassed on a golf course again.

Do you have any golfing superstitions?
I don’t have any, I could play with any ball or in any outfit. I’m pretty easy going.

What are your strengths on the course?
My wedges are definitely a strong part of my game. I’m confident from 125 yards in and have holed out a few times for eagle with a wedge. My chipping is pretty good – I love to have a chipping competition with some of the mini tour players at Close House and I’ve beaten a couple of them before.

And your weaknesses?
My driver can get me in a lot of trouble on a bad day. I can spray it a lot, and I have the odd top in me as well.

Which is your favourite club in the bag?
My 58-degree Titleist Vokey from WedgeWorks with a raw finish is just the best. I practice with it a lot and can play so many different shots with it.

Who is your best golfing friend?
It has to be Tom Rankin. We have a laugh every time we play and while it’s never serious, we’re always really competitive.

What would you be doing if you weren’t modelling?
Being a professional golfer would be great, but to be honest, I have no idea. I was so lucky to fall into modelling and have loved every minute of the last 10 years.

Who is your favourite golfer?
I think too many people say Tiger Woods, so I’ll go with Bryson DeChambeau. I love the way he plays and how aggressive he is with his gameplans on the course.

Which golf event do you enjoy most?
Having watched them on TV for years, I would love to go to The Masters and a Ryder Cup. When it comes to playing, I love being part of a pro am. My teams have a great track record with a handful of wins and second-place finishes with professionals including Alex Dixon, Richie Watson and Jack McCall.

Who do you admire?
I’d say I look up to the young mini tour players at Close House – James Wilson, Christian Brown, Sam Westwood and Jonny Douglas. They’re all so good at golf and work really hard, but they’re also great guys who’ve welcomed me into their games on the course and at the academy. I’ve learned so much from them and they help me out with my game a lot.

Which three people would join you in your dream fourball?
I’d partner Bryson and take on Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods.

If you could have one mulligan, when would you have used it?
Can I get one for every round I play from now on, please?
