A year later than planned, Morpeth Golf Club’s Ladies Section has celebrated its centenary and won two team titles to add to the celebrations.
While Morpeth Golf Club was formed in 1906 and ladies were allowed to play, it wasn’t until 1920 when the Ladies Section was formed with Mrs RN Swinney as the first lady captain and Mrs Trevelyan as ladies president. The centenary of the Ladies Section was marked in August 2021 due to Covid, with golf played in Edwardian clothes using hickory clubs before a celebration in the clubhouse.
Meanwhile, the club added to the delayed celebrations with victory in the Northumberland Ladies County Golf Association’s TR Percy and Norah Percy knockout competitions.
The five-player team won the TR Percy trophy (handicaps 20.5-28.4) for a third consecutive year with victory over Hexham in the final at Newbiggin. In the Norah Percy trophy (handicaps 28.5-54), Morpeth beat Longhirst Hall in the final. Meanwhile, the first team won their division and moved up into division two for 2022 and the evening league team finished second in their group.
