Sunderland-based youngster Joseph Newby is heading to Ireland in June – where he hopes to be crowned world under-12 champion of champions.
Ten-year-old Joseph, who has a handicap of 14 and is a member of Whitburn and Boldon, will tee it up in the event at Lough Erne alongside more than 250 of the world’s most promising young golfers from 40 countries – including several other players from our region.
Joseph told the Sunderland Echo: “I’m really excited about taking part in the champion of champions event. I’m nervous but looking forward to the tournament. I’m hoping to go out there and win it. I would like to become a professional golfer when I grow up and be part of the PGA Tour.”
Joseph started playing golf aged five after finding an old club. “I was looking for golf balls around the fifth tee at Boldon Golf Club and I found a pitching wedge,” he said. “I started hitting balls with it and got pretty good, and that is how it all started.”
Joseph’s dad, Craig, added: “Discovering his love of golf has really transformed Joseph’s life and given him real direction for the last four years. It’s an unbelievable achievement to qualify for this tournament. He has worked so hard and made a lot of sacrifices to get where he is.”
Craig also thanked Joseph’s sponsors, who have donated more than £900 to support his development so far.
“We live on a council estate in Sunderland, and I couldn’t afford to cover all the costs involved in competitive golf,” he added.
Joseph is currently being sponsored by Weights and Cakes CIC, Ron Skinner and Sons, Premier Rawmarsh store, Virtual Golf Centre Washington, Oh My Dog Whitburn, Danni Lay Gas Services Plumbing and Heating, and family friend Anthony Liddell. He also has a GoFundMe page.
Joseph is no stranger to the winner’s circle locally and nationally – and has won four times in his age category on the US Kids Golf Tour, including a victory in the Tour Championship. He has also won a Wee Wonders event, and the Harry Dixon Trophy while representing Boldon’s junior team.
