England Golf’s Disability Squad won the European Team Championship for Golfers with Disability for the first time after a tremendous tournament at Golf Club Genova Sant’Anna in Italy.
The European Team Championship is a gross score event, where mixed-gender teams of four compete in greensomes on day one, foursomes on day two, and greensomes on day three.
Heather Gilks and Oliver Hirst-Greenham managed to shoot 73 on the final day, including a brilliant eagle on the 13th, with The Oaks’ Lee York and Chris Foster shooting 74 to give the team a 21 over-par total after three days, edging the Netherlands by four shots.
England achieved a remarkable double in Italy as the team also came from behind to win the Nations Cup on the final day.
England triumphed in the nett stableford competition, played with the same format, with the team of Ken Powell, John Eakin, Aimi Bullock and Andrew Gardiner finishing level on overall points alongside Ireland and winning on countback thanks to Aimi and John shooting 44 points on the final day as Ken and Andy racked up a crucial 39 points.
England disability coach Adam Keogh said: “We started this programme 15 months ago and when we first met the players in the autumn of 2025, we sat in the team room at Woodhall Spa and looked at the Champions Wall. We had one shared ambition – to win a gold medal at the European Team Championship.
“To be coming home with two gold medals is unbelievable. The team spirit and commitment from the players in challenging formats and gruelling weather conditions has been phenomenal. The players deserve all the success they get.
“A special mention must also go to the support staff – the team of Steve Burnett, Nick and Sue Over, Doug Coote, and Tom Dobson. The players appreciate all their efforts.”
