James Maw holed the final putt of the tournament to win the North East & North West PGA Championship at Dunstanburgh Castle Golf Club.
James, from Rockliffe Hall, posted back-to-back rounds of two under-par on the Northumberland coast to win the event and pick up the Assistants’ Championship title at the same time.
Having led after the first round after shooting 66, Craig Goodfellow (Carlisle) posted a second round of 72 to finish in second place alongside James Harper (Wynyard, 72-66). Three players – Ken Ferrie, Jonathan Richardson (Hexham) and Mark Ridley (South Moor) – finished a shot further back with 36hole totals of 139.
With his second place finish, Craig climbed to the top of the NE/NW PGA’s Mizuno Order of Merit, pushing Ken Ferrie into second place as James jumped into third place in the season-long points race.
While finishing in a tie for fourth in Tuesday’s championship, Ken did pick up another winners cheque in Monday’s pro am at Dunstanburgh to add to his successful start to 2021 – sharing top spot with Simon Calvert with a four under-par round of 66.
The NE/NW PGA season continues this month with the Darlington Pro Am (May 28) and the Trump International Pro Am (May 31).
