In a league of their own

Brancepeth Castle Golf Club’s men’s team capped off a remarkable year for the club by winning the Dixon Cup at Saltburn by the Sea Golf Club.

Bringing together the winners of the five North East leagues, the Dixon Cup saw Brancepeth, winners of the North Durham League, come out on top with a team score of 437 (six scores from a team of seven counting), including the best score on the day by Jeff Willey.

North Northumberland League champions Alnmouth Golf Club and Teesside champions Wynyard finished in a share for second place just a single shot behind on 438. Hadrian League winners Close House finished in fourth place as Newcastle & District League winners City of Newcastle were fifth with a score of 448.

Brancepth Castle Golf Club captain David Tweddle said: “To win the league then go on to become the top club in the North East is a very special achievement.

“The Dixon Cup is really the icing on the cake for our incredibly talented squad of players, who have put in tremendous effort throughout the season.

“To win the North Durham League title for the first time in 32 years was very special, particularly having only been promoted into the top division last season. Being able to share our achievements with our loyal members and supporters has made this season even more special.”

The Brancepeth team featured James Glenn, Wayne Melles, Ally Baird, Martin Fulbrook, Owen Thomas, David Thomas and Jeff Willey.
