Cheshire win County Match Week for the first time in 20 years

Cheshire qualified for the England Golf Women’s County Finals for the first time in 20 years with victory in Northern Counties Match Week.

Hosting the event at Heswall, the Cheshire team needed a 5-0 victory over Durham and for Yorkshire to beat overnight leaders Lancashire 3-2 to clinch victory. When Rian Moores claimed the critical fifth point against Durham, with birdies on the final two holes against Emily Baxter, the victory and trip to the national final was sealed.

The second day of matches proved key to victory, with Cheshire facing Northumberland – who had won their opening two matches. Cheshire put together an emphatic 5-0 win with Victoria Turner defeating new British Amateur champion Jess Baker 2&1 and 15-year-old Imogen Williamson getting the better of England Girls’ international Rachel Gourley on the 18th.

Cheshire then halved with Yorkshire in their fourth match on Tuesday afternoon before beating Durham on Wednesday to book their place in the County Finals at Stoneham in September.
