Newbiggin’s Adam Wright lifted the Eden Trophy at St Andrews – adding his name to one of Scottish golf’s oldest prizes.
First played in 1919, the Eden Tournament for male golfers is one of the most important events in the Scottish golf calendar. The competitors play qualifying rounds on the New and Eden courses at the Home of Golf before the matchplay stages for both scratch and handicap flights conclude on the Eden Course – with consolation events taking place on the Strathtyrum and Jubilee courses.
Competing in the Eden Trophy for scratch players, Adam defeated Kingsfield’s Allyn Dick 1up in the event’s final having come through five rounds of matches.
Meanwhile, Houghton-le-Spring’s Sean Foster – who won the Eden Trophy in 2018 – won the Victory Cup as the leading 36-hole qualifier following rounds of 71 on the New Course and 68 on the Eden Course.
The tournament features 240 competitors from around the world, and is open to players with a handicap index not exceeding 15.4. They compete in two rounds of strokeplay before the leading 64 players (gross) move into the Eden Trophy matches, with the next best 32 players (nett) going on to compete for the Eden Tankard.
