South Moor captain raises £1,360 for The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation

Lady Elsie Robson visited South Moor Golf Club to receive a cheque for £1,360 raised in aid of her late husband Sir Bobby Robson’s cancer foundation.

South Moor’s 2024 captain Tom Wilkinson chose to raise money for The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation as part of his captaincy. Sir Bobby and his family played at the moorland course in Stanley, not far from where he grew up and lived in later life.

“Members were so supportive of the cause and were very generous, donating prizes and buying raffle tickets,” said Tom. “There was fantastic buy-in as people were well aware of the vital work that Sir Bobby’s foundation does in funding research and care here in the North East. South Moor is a mixed club of Newcastle and Sunderland fans, and although Sir Bobby is remembered as a black and white, such is the respect for the man and the cause that everyone got fully behind it. I must thank all the members for their generosity.”

Lady Elsie added: “It was a great pleasure to meet Tom and everyone at South Moor. Everyone was very welcoming, and the club has a lovely atmosphere. It’s no wonder Bob used to enjoy playing here. We’re very grateful for the money Tom has helped raise during his year as captain and it will help us carry on the work Bob began when he launched his foundation.”

Sir Bobby Robson launched his foundation in 2008 and it has gone on to raise more than £20 million to find more effective ways to detect and treat cancer. It funds cutting-edge cancer treatment and innovative patient support services that directly benefit patients, both children and adults, in the North East and Cumbria and plays a significant role in international efforts against cancer. Managed within Newcastle Hospitals Charity, the foundation works within the NHS and in partnership with other leading charities and organisations.
