The Durham County Golf Union, and the wider golfing community across the region, is mourning the loss of county president Gerry Johnson.
Gerry – a long-standing member of Bishop Auckland and a member of The Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews as well as the immediate past captain of Ganton Golf Club – passed away peacefully on March 28.
As county president, having been elected to the role at the AGM in January 2024, he was looking forward to his second year in office.
He was elected to the county executive in 2013 and served Bishop Auckland Golf Club in several capacities – including as the longest-serving member of the club committee, a trustee, greens chair, team manager and club captain.
This season, Gerry was set to welcome the Northern Counties Men’s Qualifying Championship – AKA The Big Six – to Bishop Auckland. Durham has won this event on only two occasions, the last being in 2004, and Gerry was determined to see Durham win it at home this year.
