City of Newcastle’s Andrew Minnikin eclipsed the field to win the North Yorkshire and South Durham Championship at Cleveland Golf Club.
Andrew posted a first round of 63, two shots better than the previous course record, including an eagle at the second and birdies at six, seven and eight. He added birdies at 12, 13, 16 and 18 to take the lead with a nine under-par score. He then backed it up with a round of 66 in the afternoon to top the leaderboard by 11 shots from Gavin Nesbit and City clubmate Phil Ridden.
Phil also had to settle for second place in the Chester Bowl after a round of 69 saw him finish tied with Northumberland county teammate Harrison Sewell and the home club’s John Egglestone – as Brancepeth’s Dan Fox lifted the trophy following his round of 68.
