I’ve seen plenty of players over the years who can achieve a faster clubhead speed than I ever could, yet they struggle to match the distance I can hit the driver. Why is this?
The main cause is the amount of backspin they impart on the ball, making the shot inefficient. To reduce spin with the driver, and maximise distance, try this drill…
Setup to the ball as you normally would with the driver but instead of starting with the club directly behind the ball, move it back 6-9ins. Start your swing from here. This will make your shoulders close slightly, which helps you swing the club a little more from the inside. This also helps you make a better rotation in the backswing, creating a shallower angle back into the ball which will produce less backspin and a more efficient shot.
