Cornwall won the Senior Men’s County Finals for the first time ever, beating Lincolnshire in a tense final day at Torquay Golf Club, as all four teams – including Durham – had a chance to win the title.
Cornwall’s dramatic victory meant they were the first side from the South West to win the trophy since its inception in 2005.
After a rain-shortened first day, Cornwall edged Lincolnshire 3.5-2.5, while Durham beat BB&O (Berkshire, Buckinghamshire & Oxfordshire) by the same scoreline. On day two, BB&O beat Cornwall 5-4 and Lincolnshire beat Durham 7-2. Those results set up a frantic final day, with all four teams level on match points and able to win the title.
Despite having lost their final-day morning foursomes to Durham, Cornwall bounced back to win their afternoon singles and complete a 5-4 overall win, meaning that if BB&O drew or only narrowly beat Lincolnshire, Cornwall would lift the trophy.
Lincolnshire were searching for their first-ever title too and led 2-1 after the morning foursomes. In a dramatic finish, BB&O’s Gary Mumford held on against Paul Wharton to win the final singles match on the final hole, which saw the overall match finish 4.5-4.5 and handed Cornwall the title.
Lincolnshire’s Colin Trestrail was the player of the tournament, winning all five of his matches played.
