Durham beat Lancashire to open up Northern Counties title race

Durham’s men’s team opened up the Northern Counties league title race with a single point win over Lancashire at Hurlston Hall.

The 9.5-8.5 victory left Lancashire tied at the top of the league with Yorkshire following the White Rose county’s 12.5-5.5 win over Cumbria at Furness.

The final third round match, between Northumberland and Cheshire at Newcastle United, will take place on July 13 – with a win for either team moving them into the tie for top spot.

At Hurlston Hall, Durham backed up a 3.5-2.5 win in the morning foursomes with a 6-6 result in the singles as Jamie Birkbeck (Bishop Auckland), Martin McCririck (South Shields), Ryan Barrett-Elliott (Eaglescliffe), Callum Moncur (Darlington) and Jordan Bettis (Ravensworth) won their matches, and James Glenn (Bishop Auckland) and Grant Dixon (Seaham) picked up half points.
