Darlington’s Callum Moncur topped the 18+ leaderboard at the 31st Junior European Open with Sky Sports.
Having qualified for the Champions Week Finals – played over five rounds with each player’s best two scores over the opening four rounds, along with their fifth round counting towards their total – Callum led the field in his category with a score of 221 (74-75-72).
“I’m over the moon to have won such a big European event,” said plus-one handicapper Callum. “I qualified for the finals in 2020 and missed the cut, so I’ve been desperate to get back out there. To get into the finals in the penultimate qualifier at Otley in September was great, and I’m chuffed I was able to go out there, play well, and win in Spain.”
The win in the +18 category followed Callum’s runner-up finish in the World Junior Golf Championship in Portugal in February, and he’s hoping to build on his success next season.
“Winning over in Spain rounds things off nicely, having started out the year with the runner-up finish in Portugal. The standard was so high in Spain, and I had very strong groups throughout. The event is amazing too – everything is laid on for you and it feels like such a massive occasion.
“Looking ahead, I have a plan in place with my swing coach and personal trainer, and lots of work to do this winter,” added Callum, who turns 19 in December. “From there, with the help of my amazing sponsors and hopefully a few extra ones, I aim to play in as many national events as I can in 2024 and want to give it my best shot to get into the England team.”
Meanwhile, Sam Marshall lifted the boys’ trophy at the 31st Junior European Open, with Lili-Rose Hunt winning the girls’ title and topping the nett leaderboard.
