Work is almost complete on a major revamp of the golf course at Whitburn Golf Club.
Construction company Greasley, along with head greenkeeper Eddie Cuthbert and his team, have completed bunker renovations and the construction of several new tee boxes following a £250,000 loan from a club member.
The improvements – overseen by Gaunt Golf Design – have also benefitted from work by the club’s volunteer greens team, which is headed by Ken Stewart. Having contributed a great deal to the work, the team has been invited to be the first to play the new white tee course. There will be a prize on offer and the opportunity to be the first holder of the new course record.
As well as bunkers, Eddie and Jonathan Gaunt’s plan includes a spectacular raised tee at the 16th – part of a reorganisation of the final three holes on the coastal side of the course. There have also been extensions to holes three and seven, and some reconstruction of the 12th hole with its approach over water.
The club has also paid its respects to 86-year-old George Hills in recent weeks, who served the club in many ways including as president, captain and a committee member.
