Nik Jones lifted the Mike Fleming Salver following victory in the final of the Northumberland County Golf Union’s seniors’ matchplay event at Ponteland Golf Club.
Ponteland-based Nik – one of the eight qualifiers who made it through to the matchplay following the Seniors’ Championship strokeplay event, which was won by Backworth’s Steve Anderton earlier this season – beat 2025 Senior Men’s County Champion of Champions Sandy Twynholm 1up to lift the trophy.
Having won the first two holes, Nik – competing in the event for the first time – found himself all-square with Morpeth-based Sandy through nine holes. Having moved back to 1up after 12 holes, Nik’s advantage was doubled at the 14th following a mistake by Sandy. Both players then parred the 15th and 16th holes, before Sandy made birdie at 17 to keep the match going. The players then found greenside bunkers on 18 – with both managing to make par fives as Nik closed out the victory.
