TaylorMade has announced the latest additions to the P·Series family – P·UDI and P·DHY.
When researching the next iteration of utility irons, the engineering and product creation teams at TaylorMade wanted to understand which golfers play utility irons. Research showed that UDI usage skews towards the better player, but a lot of mid-handicap players still play utility irons. The majority of DHY players ranged from 6-18 handicaps.
“As we look to the future, beyond the tech and the design language, we are excited about repositioning our utility irons into the P·Series family,” said Matt Bovee, director of product creation, iron and wedge at TaylorMade. “P·UDI is designed as an easy addition to the bags of players that currently play P·Series product, while P·DHY is an extremely forgiving option for players of all skill levels.”
Both models (RRP £229) feature a pearl satin finish and mirror black ridge across the middle. Each iron has also been designed to fit seamlessly with other P·Series irons, with the P·UDI taking inspiration from work with tour players to create a traditional iron shape that inspires confidence and is easy to play.
The P·UDI has a moderate sole width, but is narrower than the more forgiving P·DHY. P·UDI does, however, have a more compact head size compared to the P·790 irons – serving as an alternative option for other P·Series long irons.
P·UDI – which is available in 17°, 20° and 22° lofts – also has a traditional iron shape with a raised face height, slimmer topline and less offset than previous TaylorMade UDI products. The blade length is noticeably shorter than the P·DHY (approx. 5mm).
Meanwhile, P·DHY – available in 18°, 20° and 22° lofts – focuses on delivering a lower centre of gravity position with a slightly taller toe height, more backbar visible from address, and a lower face profile for easier launch. A wider sole also aids forgiveness.
Designed to deliver easy launch, increased forgiveness and enhanced consistency, a new internal weighting structure in both irons combines with technologies such as the forged hollow body construction with high-speed 4140 face, SpeedFoam Air, Thru Slot Speed Pocket, and up to 26g of tungsten mass.
