Region’s best one step closer to The Open

Golfers from across the region are heading to Final Qualifying for The Open Championship following Regional Qualifying at 15 venues across Great Britain and Ireland.

At Goswick, Westerhope-based professional George Cowan was one of five players to come through a 12-man playoff for a spot in Final Qualifying. Scotsmen Jack Doherty (four under-par) and Ross Munro (two under-par) avoided the drama of extra holes before 12 players contested a playoff for five places. The players to make it through were George, Aidan O’Hagan, Joe Bryce, Arjuna Anday and Ross Laird. Those who missed out in the playoff included Close House-based Christian Brown.

They will be joined in Final Qualifying by Brampton-based professional Matty Lamb – who came through the 18-hole qualifier at Northamptonshire County.

Meanwhile at Fulford, Malton & Norton’s David Hague led the field with a seven under-par total. Ramside Hall’s Jack Trewhitt also made it through, while Blackwell Grange-based professional Aaron Cox will tee it up in Final Qualifying having finished as seventh reserve in Regional Qualifying and then made it into the field.

They will be joined at Final Qualifying – which takes place at West Lancashire, Dundonald Links in Ayrshire, Burnham & Berrow in Somerset and Royal Cinque Ports in Kent on Tuesday July 2 – by players including Romanby-based DP World Tour winner Dan Brown and English Amateur champion Ben Brown; Northern Golfer columnist Chris Paisley; and tour players Marcus Armitage, Garrick Porteous, Andrew Wilson and John Parry.

A total of 288 golfers will compete in Final Qualifying with a minimum of 16 places available into The 152nd Open at Royal Troon, which takes place July 18-21.
