Yorkshire move top of the men’s Northern Counties League

Yorkshire’s men’s team moved to the top of the Northern Counties League after a win over Durham at Crosland Heath.

Having gone into the penultimate round of matches tied with Durham at the top of the league table, both teams being undefeated with five match points, Yorkshire came through a close match with victories in both sessions giving them a 10.5-7.5 win.

Leading 4-2 after the morning foursomes – Yorkshire’s Max Reynolds, Jake Sowden, Will Swarbrick, George Hanson and Daniel Norman earned singles victories. For Durham, James Glenn, Luke Bonser, Grant Dixon and Michael Henson won their singles matches while three matches were halved – Charlie Daughtrey v Jamie Birkbeck, Lewis Harrison v Kevin Suggett, and Matt Dolling v Martin McCririck.

With the win, Yorkshire moved to the top of the standings with seven match points heading into the final round of matches in September.

Meanwhile, Northumberland earned a 10.5-7.5 victory over Cumbria at Furness. With the score tied 3-3 after the morning foursomes, Northumberland’s Cam Thoburn, Dan Bullen, James Cram, Dan Halliday, Angus Ball, Paul Caldicott and Rob Henderson won their singles matches as Mark Wharton picked up half a point – Northumberland winning the session 7.5-4.5.

In the third match of the penultimate weekend, Lancashire beat Cheshire 10-8 at Ormskirk to move to five match points and sit alongside Durham in the table.

The final round of matches will take place on September 5 – with Yorkshire hosting Lancashire at Moortown, Durham facing Northumberland at Houghton-le-Spring, and Cheshire taking on Cumbria at Tytherington.
