City of Newcastle’s Phil Ridden put together four sub-par rounds en route to a six-shot win in the Northumberland County Strokeplay Championship at Westerhope.
Phil shot rounds of 67, 65, 67 and 70 to win the event for the third time – following his victories in 2010 and 2019 – as Harrison Sewell finished second for a second consecutive year with a four-round total of 13 under-par. Matfen Hall-based Rob Henderson finished third as Westerhope’s Cameron Thoburn was fourth – and clubmate Chris Henderson won the nett trophy.
“It’s a great feeling to win this event again,” said Phil. “It’s a tough one with four rounds over two days, particularly when there’s some heavy downpours mixed in. The team at Westerhope put on a great event and I can’t thank everyone at the club, and the county executive, enough for giving us the opportunity to compete over the weekend.
“I’m not sure how many more weekends like this I have in me, so to win and shoot four under-par rounds to get to 19 under is great. I enjoyed the whole weekend, and the final day alongside Harrison was a good contest. I’m happy to add another win to my record and hopefully there’s a few more down the road.”
Meanwhile, Morpeth’s Alan Young won the county’s Under 18’s Championship with rounds of 72 and 78 on the first day. He will go on to represent Northumberland in the County Champion of Champions at Woodhall Spa on September 13-14.
