The Dec 23/Jan 24 edition of Northern Golfer is available in golf clubs and retailers across the region now
Once again we’ve got a packed edition – and we’ve ensured it’s as bright, colourful and positive as ever!
The closing weeks of the season invariably deliver highlights for players from across our region, and 2023 provided multiple success stories to shine a spotlight on. This edition we bring you stories of national team success, including a massive win for Blackwell Grange’s Matthew Walker and Marcus Duncan – who beat 1,295 other pairs from across the country to be crowned Daily Mail Foursomes champions.
There has also been good news for Rosie Belsham, who turned around her form in great style to win her second college title in Hawaii – and make sure we got at least one bright and sunny picture in our December/January edition.
In Teeing Off we also catch up with Garrick Porteous and Andrew Wilson, who returned to DP World Tour Q School in Spain and once again came through the six-round Final Stage to keep their cards. We also speak to Maggie Whitehead after she confirmed she’ll be heading to the University of Virginia in 2024.
Sticking with the positive theme, we have a full report on this year’s Match Play Pairs final, which was won by Barnard Castle’s John Matthews and Ray Pipe – and a look ahead to the 2024 event, which will have an enhanced prize package thanks to our new partnership with Albatross Golf Holidays & Events.
One of the highlights of my golfing year was getting to play Ganton on the eve of The R&A Boys’ and Girls’ Championships, and looking back on that round as snow was falling reminded me of much happier times out on the course this season.
Invariably, the best golfing experiences at this time of year are to be found at the coast and we have a Special Focus exploring some of our favourite places to visit, plus a second special profiling two of Cumbria’s best courses.
There’s also a Round With England Golf president Chris Pascall; the latest from our columnists, including caddy Chris Simmons’ reflections on a positive year on tour with Matt Jordan; the latest gear news; and our recap of the golfing year – which looks back at some of the great golf played by region’s golfers in 2023.
So, pull up a chair in the clubhouse or at home, grab a coffee or a beer, and enjoy our final edition of 2023.
