John Kennedy named in England senior men’s teams for Euros and Home Internationals

England Golf has confirmed its senior men’s teams for the upcoming European Senior Men’s Team Championship and Senior Women’s & Men’s Home Internationals – featuring R&A Senior Men’s Amateur and Scottish Senior Men’s Open champion John Kennedy.

Consett & District-based John will make his England debut in the European Team Championships – which take place at Diamond Country Club in Austria on September 2-6 – alongside Stephen Creed (Stratford-on-Avon), Danny Holmes (Rochester & Cobham Park), Peter Jackson (Woking), Steve Sansome (Rothley Park) and Martin Young (Brokenhurst Manor).

The same six players, plus John Kemp (Woburn), will be part of the Senior Women’s & Men’s Home Internationals team – with the event set to take place at Ferndown Golf Club in Dorset on September 16-18. Announced earlier this month, the senior women’s team will feature Malton & Norton’s Emma Brown.

Team captain Andrew Atkinson said: “This year has been a very difficult year to pick the team with six players all vying for the final two places. I had numerous sleepless nights and a long consultation with (England Golf performance director) Nigel Edwards before we came to our final decision.

“We felt that Stephen Creed’s experience and results in Europe meant that he was the strongest favourite to take one of those places. Martin Young, who only turned 55 in July, had results in The British Seniors and the English matchplay which gave him the nod over the other four.

“Kev Parkes, Gareth Bradley, Andrew Smith and Mat Stanford should be incredibly proud of their achievements this year, I know they will all use this year’s disappointment to make next year a fabulous year for these very talented players.

“My expectations for the team are very high and I’m sure the seven selected will represent England with honour and give everything to carry on the team’s fantastic legacy.”
