Bishop Auckland Golf Club dominated the Durham County Ladies Championship at a windswept South Shields Golf Club as Briony Bayles lifted the trophy.
The 2016 Northern Golfer Junior Champion of Champions, Briony beat clubmate Jessica Hall in the final as both girls teamed up with Angela Simpson to win the team gross and nett trophies.
Both finalists cruised through their semi-final matches with Briony defeating Sue Musgrove 5&3 and Jessica beating Ella Craig 7&5.
Briony went 3up after three holes in a cold and windy final before Jessica birdied the eighth and ninth to claw back the deficit. However Briony, 17, was able to pull away on the back nine to claim a 4&3 victory.
As well as winning the Junior Champion of Champions in 2016, Briony claimed the St Andrew’s Junior Ladies Open and continued her work with the England Golf Regional coaching squad.
“Conditions were tough out there, you just had to try and make pars. The people who came out to watch deserve medals,” said Briony.
“I have exams coming up but after that I just want to try and play as much golf as I can and get my handicap as low as possible with a view to possibly going on to a golfing scholarship in the USA and a career in golf.”
As well as 17-year-old Briony and 18-year-old Jess, 10-year-old Maggie Whitehead from Ramside Hall was among the 16 qualifiers for the matchplay rounds.
