Yorkshire’s men’s team maintained their incredible run of success in the Northern Counties Men’s League – winning all five of their matches in 2025 to top the table and lift the trophy for the 10th time in a row.
In the final match of the season, the team travelled north to Chester-le-Street to face Durham. Following a 3.5-2.5 win in the morning foursomes, the White Rose romped to victory in the singles with nine wins and a half in the 12 matches to secure the league title.
“It’s a great feeling to be league champions again after another fantastic season for Team Yorkshire,” said captain David Appleyard.
“We’re building on very strong foundations – put in place by previous captains, officials and players. Our job is to continue that success and I’m so proud of all the players who’ve been part of the team this year – from the experienced players who’ve shone throughout to those who’ve come into the side for the first time or at short notice. Every one of the players has represented Yorkshire brilliantly this season and contributed to our shared success.
“A huge thank you must also go to everyone who is part of Team Yorkshire. Our coaching team – Gareth Davies, Steve Robinson and Craig Fricker – have been brilliant again, and I can’t thank all the members of the executive who attend our matches at home and away, and support me personally throughout the year, enough. The same goes for the families and friends, the people who come along at host clubs, and everyone who cheers on the team throughout the season – you’re all part of Team Yorkshire and your support is greatly appreciated.”
Having narrowly beaten Lancashire 8.5-9.5 at Hesketh in the opening match of the campaign, Yorkshire went on to beat Cumbria 11.5-6.5 at Scarcroft.
The team then dominated the singles matches at Sand Moor – winning 10 of the 12 ties – to beat Cheshire 13.4-4.5.
In the penultimate round of matches, Yorkshire narrowly beat Northumberland 10-8 at Bradford Golf Club – following a 3-3 tie in the morning foursomes with a 7-5 win in the singles.
“The year has been full of great performances,” added David. “If I had to pick one highlight, I’d go back to our first game against Lancashire and choose Lewis Hollingworth sealing the win on the 18th green with the last putt. That was massive and set us on the road to winning the league.
“We have already started the work for 2026; we have the same goals as always and defending the league trophy is right up there again for next season.”
In the final league table, Lancashire finished second with four wins while Durham finished third with two wins in their five matches.
