Phil Woodcock and Martin Greaves

Yorkshire Union of Golf Clubs welcomes new president

Pike Hills’ Martin Greaves becomes president of the Yorkshire Union of Golf Clubs as Phil Woodcock reflects on a successful term – including victories for the county’s men’s and boys’ teams

Martin Greaves has taken office as president of the Yorkshire Union of Golf Clubs following the union’s AGM.

Martin, from Pike Hills Golf Club, succeeds Phil Woodcock in the role and will serve as president in 2025 before handing the baton to Ripon City’s Bruce Light. Secretary of the County Members Association for the last eight years, Martin has also refereed at championships around the county and beyond. He also served as president of the York Union of Golf Clubs in 2015.

“There’s lots to look forward to and I hope I can follow in Phil’s footsteps and have a busy, and successful, year,” said Martin, who was captain of Pike Hills in 2000 and served as the club’s chairman from 2004 to 2014. “There is lots of competitive golf to look forward to, right across the year, and the men’s, boys’ and seniors’ sections are full of talented players. I hope to be able to cheer on our players as they achieve individual and team success throughout the season. On a personal note, I’m looking forward to meeting lots of golfers across Yorkshire, all the Northern Counties and nationally. I’ll also be supporting the County Members events as they continue to go from strength to strength. There’s a lot in the diary and I’m sure it will be tremendous fun from start to finish.”

Scarborough North Cliff-based Phil – a member of his home club for 57 years – will continue in his role leading the boys’ system while serving as immediate past-president. He said: “2025 was a fantastic year to be president of the county union, and it was undoubtedly one of the best and proudest years of my life. Winning the men’s and boys’ Northern Counties league titles, and becoming national boys’ champions in England Golf’s centenary year, were fantastic results at the end of a brilliant season. Having worked hard on the boys’ system for nine years now, it was a real privilege once again to see them achieve so much success on the national stage.

“I can’t thank all the clubs, district unions and counties enough for their kind invitations and hospitality over the last 12 months and I’m looking forward to visiting many of them in the months and years to come. The best part of this game is the people you meet and places you visit, and I’ve enjoyed that so much in the last year – and I’m sure Martin will get a lot from those experiences this season as well.”
