Wrigley’s playoff heartache

Alex Wrigley came close to defending his Mercedes-Benz International Pro-Am title at Al Ain Golf Club in the UAE.

The PGA Cup international from Hartlepool lost to Chris Gane at the first hole of a sudden death playoff.

Silvermere’s Gane began the day one shot behind overnight leader Wrigley but was able to card a round of 67 to tie for first place on 11 under-par.

Wrigley closed with a round of 68 and it looked as if he might have a chance of keeping his title when Gane bogeyed the 17th. Gane stayed calm to finish tied and then came out on top with a birdie at the first extra hole after Wrigley had to settle for par.

Wrigley – who shot rounds of 67, 66, 68 and 68 – has now been runner-up three times in the event as well as winning last year.

South Moor’s Mark Ridley clinched a fourth place finish with rounds of 69, 66, 72 and 71.
