United’s new signing

Brian Rumney has taken on a new role as secretary/professional at Newcastle United Golf Club after leaving Arcot Hall.

Brian plans to revamp the coaching and teaching set up at the Nuns Moor course, including launching a get into golf initiative.

Brian is no stranger to the administrative side of golf having held positions at Arcot Hall, Parklands, Hollins Hall and Blyth.

He will also be aiming to expand the teaching opportunities at the club while launching a scheme to attract newcomers to the game, which he hopes will benefit membership at United an other local clubs.

“It’s going to be interesting for the club and for me, and I’m looking forward to getting the free get into golf scheme up and running,” said Brian. “The idea is to provide free taster sessions of four, one-hour group lessons so people can come along and have a go.

“We will provide the equipment and golf balls and they can see whether they like the game. From there they can move on to things like taster membership, academy membership and, hopefully, on to full membership.

“It’s all about steps. Having a membership form thrust under your nose early is too big a step – this way you can have a go at no cost and then think about it.”

Dates and times for the free classes are: May 8&9 18.30-19.30pm; May 19 11.00am-noon; May 22&23 – 19.45–20.45pm. To book, email
