Woodsome's three winners

Three winners crowned at Woodsome Hall

Three major competitions have taken place at Woodsome Hall in recent weeks.

Tommy Roberts – a member of the club since the age of 15 – lifted the Hirst Claret Jug. One of Woodsome’s newer trophies, it celebrates the memory of two long-standing members – Alfred and Gordon Hirst. Alfred was a member for more than 70 years, while Gordon was part of the club for over 60 years. Other members of the family have chalked up impressive totals too – Edwin is close to an incredible 80 years of membership, while John and Richard are around 40 years into their associations with the club. In total, with other family members, the family has some 300 years of membership between them.

Meanwhile, the 36-hole Jubilee Trophy – donated by Woodsome’s president, the Earl of Dartmouth – was won by Richard Holt for a seventh time. His first win came back in 1989, while he also won the title in 2000 and 2001. This year’s victory is his first in 19 years.

Finally, the 36-hole Past Captain’s Salver was won by Tim Capewell with a two-shot margin of victory – despite venturing out of bounds at the 17th and 18th holes in the second round. He also left the course on 17 in round one – and says he is devising a new strategy for the penultimate hole.
