Moortown’s Theo McCormick led the field in the 2025 Yorkshire Boys Amateur Championship at Sandburn Hall.
Theo topped the leaderboard with a four under-par total following rounds of 68 and 72 as Teesside’s Alex Boyes finished second on one under-par and took home the trophy for the leading under-16 player.
“Winning the Boys Amateur Championship feels like hard work starting to pay off,” said Theo, who was competing in his first event of the year following a serious case of pneumonia in the spring.
“It was good to be back on the course competing,” he added. “It was nice to finally get my season going and build a bit of confidence early in the year.
“Sandburn can be a tricky place to play but I drove it particularly well in both rounds, which is massive around there. I was also happy with my chipping and putting – and putting those bits together led to two good scores.
“I only realised I was leading on the last hole, just after I birdied 17. The moment didn’t get to me, and I hit a great nine-iron into the 18th green to get the job done.
“I’m feeling fit and strong and there’s a lot of golf to look forward to in Yorkshire and on the national amateur circuit. I’m looking forward to events like the Carris Trophy and the men’s Yorkshire Amateur Championship – it’s a tough ask but it would be something to do the double, wouldn’t it?”
Theo – who is also supported by Darrington Golf Club, where his dad, PGA professional Andy, is based – will go on to represent Yorkshire in the County Champion of Champions at Woodhall Spa on September 13-14.
