The 2025 season produced big stories close to home and further afield as the region’s top golfers flourished in the spotlight. Here’s our pick of the biggest wins, stories and successes of the year…
January
Huddersfield’s Lily Hirst collected the first individual win of her college career in the US at the Match in the Desert, while Tom Osborne (Lindrick) and Dylan Shaw-Radford (Huddersfield) were in excellent form as they helped England win the Octagonal Match in Spain.
Greenkeepers gathered in Harrogate for the annual British and International Golf Greenkeepers Association Turf Management Exhibition, and the Yorkshire Ladies County Golf Association began its 125th birthday celebrations.
February
England won the Nations Cup as part of the 95th Portuguese Amateur Championship – with Yorkshiremen Ben Brown (Romanby) and Tom Osborne teaming up with Andrew Haswell to lift the trophy. Meanwhile, John Parry finished second at the Magical Kenya Open presented by absa.
March
Josh Berry came through a four-man playoff to claim his maiden HotelPlanner Tour title at the Kolkata Challenge at Royal Calcutta – and went on to narrowly miss out on back-to-back wins in his next start in India. Rotherham-based Lucas Martin won the British Universities and College Sport (BUCS) English & Welsh Championship at The Nottinghamshire, and England’s men’s squad – including Tom Osborne – won the European Cup of Nations by 14 shots at Sotogrande.
April
Lucas Martin won the R&A Student Tour Series Final at St Andrews – shooting a five under-par 67 in the final round on the Old Course.
Jack Whaley (Rotherham) won his fourth college event of the 2024-25 season at the Roadrunner Classic at The Farm before going on to be part of Dalton State’s victory in the Southern States Athletic Conference Men’s Golf Championship in Greenville, Alabama.
Hornsea-based Jack Maxey shot an eight under-par round of 64 to pick up the first win of his college career in the US at the A-State Spring Invitational before going on to win the Sun Belt Conference Men’s Golf Championship at Annandale.
England’s U16 boys and girls team – featuring Teesside-based Alex Boyes and Tom Hartshorne as well as Doncaster-based George Cooper – stormed to a 16-8 win in their international match against Spain at Seaton Carew, while the England women’s and men’s teams – featuring Tom Osborne – completed an emphatic 19.5-10.5 victory in the biennial match against Spain at La Galiana.
Huddersfield’s Dylan Shaw-Radford topped the leaderboard in the Cleveland Salver, while Yorkshire’s best professionals and amateurs faced off in the second edition of The Match at Ganton, and 91-year-old Brenda Parker was honoured with the Lifetime Service Award at the 2025 England Golf Awards following decades of service to golf in Yorkshire.
May
Jack Whaley won his fifth individual college title of the season as he led the field in the 73rd annual NAIA Men’s Golf National Championship – shooting a single-round NAIA record 61 on the opening day at TPC Deere Run en route to the title.
Middlesbrough-based Katie Stephens beat defending champion Grace Lambert to win the 120th Yorkshire Ladies County Golf Association Championship at Huddersfield as Amy Staveley (Ganton) etched her name into the history books as the first winner of the North England Women’s Amateur.
Emma Brown (Malton & Norton) won the Yorkshire Senior Ladies Golf Association Championship at Wakefield, as clubmate Carol Simpson won the Ann Howard Trophy (Over 60s) at the English Senior Women’s Amateur Championship at The Nottinghamshire.
Reece Samson (Kingswood Golf Centre) picked up a national win in the PGA Chrome Tour Open Series South West Open at Bovey Castle, while Driffield-based Paul Lockwood topped the leaderboard in the PGA in Yorkshire Masters at York.
Moortown’s Theo McCormick led the field in the Yorkshire Boys Amateur Championship at Sandburn Hall, and Jake Sowden (The Oaks) lifted the Berkshire Trophy.
June
Jack Whaley was named among the recipients of the 2025 Jack Nicklaus Award presented by Workday – which recognises the national player of the year at Division I, II, III, NAIA and NJCAA levels in the US.
On the PGA in Yorkshire circuit, James Walker (The Oaks) won the Yorkshire Open at Howley Hall, and Harry Hunter-Mapp lifted the Yorkshire Classic trophy at Rotherham after a playoff.
In the Yorkshire Order of Merit – Dominic Moon won the Seaton Salver at his home club, Richard Wheatley won the Auchterlonie Spoon at Selby, George Hanson led the field at his home club as he won the Crosland Heath Scratch Open, Oakdale-based Michael Robson won the Vardon Grip at Harrogate and the Pannal Rosebowl, and Jack Maxey topped the leaderboard in The Sheffield Plate at Rotherham.
Meanwhile, Mark Marshall won the One-Arm World Championship at Cleveland, and Wakefield-based Mark Booth topped the leaderboard in the Yorkshire Seniors’ Amateur Championship at York.
July
Dan Brown secured an emotional two-shot victory at the BMW International Open at Golfclub München Eichenried – shooting a six under-par round of 66 to reach 22 under-par (70-65-65-66) and fend off playing partner Jordan Smith on the final day.
Rotherham’s Lucas Martin, Jack Whaley and Charlie Daughtrey produced a standout team performance to win the Yorkshire Team Championship at Lindrick by eight shots – while Bradford’s Harry Lawlor, Tom Bather and Sebastian Cadman won the Yorkshire Junior Club Team Championship at Catterick.
In the Yorkshire Order of Merit – Jack Maxey won the Oakdale Acorn, Richard Wheatley shot 10 under-par to win the Sir Norman Rae Classic at Northcliffe before going on to win the Bingley St Ives Salver, and Oliver Cage won The Whitley Cup at Dewsbury by 11 shots.
Lindrick’s Ian Clarke topped the leaderboard in the Northern Counties Golf Union’s Seniors’ Amateur Stroke Play Championship at Clitheroe, and Cookridge Hall’s Zara Ali won the Pleasington Putter.
Lees Hall-based professional Michael Ramsden topped the leaderboard in the PGA in Yorkshire Championship at Hull, and Rochelle Morris won her first event as a fully qualified PGA professional – the WPGA Series event at Redditch.
August
England won the Girls’ & Boys’ Home Internationals for a fifth consecutive year in Cork, Ireland – with Alex Boyes and Tom Hartshorne in the side – as the Men’s & Women’s team won their event with Lily Hirst, Tom Osborne and Jake Sowden in the team.
Max Berrisford (Ilkley) lifted the Yorkshire Amateur Championship trophy for the first time with a two-shot victory at Cleveland.
In the professional ranks – Alex Belt topped the leaderboard in The Leeds Cup, the oldest professional golf trophy in the world; Ganton professional Gary Brown and his amateur partner Graham Cook won the PGA Super 60s title at Cardrona; and Rotherham-based James Freeman shot 59 in the Midland Open at Whittington Heath.
Beverley and East Riding-based Coby Job won the men’s Race to Woodhall Spa title, Dan Norman lifted the 56th Teesside Trophy at his home club, and Ganton-based Charles Wright lifted the Yorkshire U16 Boys Championship trophy at Doncaster as Abbeydale’s Albie Walker won the U14 title.
Sheffield’s boys’ team were crowned champions of the Yorkshire-Inter District Union’s Junior League – extending their success to a fourth consecutive year before they went on to win the YIDU Team Championship for a third consecutive year.
Yorkshire Amateur runner-up Habib Khan produced a superb five under-par score to lead the field of professionals and elite amateurs when the 2020protour visited Rotherham.
September
Yorkshire’s men’s team maintained their incredible run of success in the Northern Counties Men’s League – winning all five of their matches in 2025 to top the table and lift the trophy for the 10th time in a row as the county boys’ team completed a dominant campaign in the Northern Counties Boys’ League – winning all five of their matches to top the table as well.
The Rotherham team of Charlie Daughtrey, Lewis Hollingworth and Lucas Martin won the English Men’s Champion Club title at The Oaks.
The Halifax, Huddersfield and District Union of Golf Clubs’ men’s team topped the YIDU league after a dramatic final day draw with the Sheffield union – before going on to win the YIDU Team Championship trophy at Crosland Heath.
Richard Wheatley cemented his place at the top of the Yorkshire Order of Merit with victory in the penultimate event of the season – the MacKenzie Salver at Fulford – before George Hanson won the final event of 2025 at Bradford.
James Walker secured top spot in the PGA in England and Wales (North) Order of Merit with victory in the Lancashire Open at Pike Fold, before going on to secure the PGA in Yorkshire order of merit title as well.
Heworth’s Cameron Ferguson won the Northern Golfer Junior Champion of Champions at Longhirst Hall as Habib Khan lifted the Yorkshire Matchplay Championship trophy at Crosland Heath and Frank Greaves won the Seniors’ Matchplay Championship.
Rob Harris completed a double order of merit win on the 2020protour; and Sand Moor’s Ian Backhouse, Peter Claughton and Kirk Easton teamed up to win the Yorkshire Seniors Team Championship at Harrogate.
October
Charlotte Heath earned her Ladies European Tour card for 2026 following her 10th top 10 finish of 2025 on the LET Access Series, while Josh Berry secured his DP World Tour card through the HotelPlanner Tour’s Race to Mallorca.
Lucas Martin successfully defended the North of England Amateur trophy at Seaton Carew.
Malton & Norton-based David Hague topped the leaderboard in the Clutch Pro Golf Tour’s Mizuno Championship at Al Zorah, while England’s U16s stormed to a 14-4 victory in their annual international match with Ireland at Ballybunion with Alex Boyes and Tom Hartshorne in the team.
Hornsea’s Steve Uzzell and Matty Raybould were crowned Yorkshire Inter-Club Foursomes champions as Cherry Marley (The Oaks) lifted the individual trophy at the White Sands Invitational in The Bahamas and Garforth-based Jake Wallis fired a final round 65 to win his first college event in the US at Bayonet Golf Club.
