Seniors Leeds the way

Some of the biggest names in European Seniors golf will be taking part in a new event at Leeds Golf Centre next month.

Ryder Cup players, European Tour winners and PGA Tour champions are on their way to the Leeds Seniors Masters May 30-June 1.

Players already confirmed include Andrew Oldcorn, Paul Wesselingh, Peter Baker, Gordon J Brand, Gary Wolstenholme and Bob Cameron, who was a junior member at Gateshead club Whickham.

The Leeds Senior Masters is aimed at professionals over the age of 48 and is part of the Senior Masters Tour, which stages regular tournaments for players outside of the European Seniors Tour.

The three-day event will begin with a pro am on the first day. The event is the first of its kind in Leeds since the Ryder Cup reunion in 2009 and it will have a prize fund of at least £25,000 .

The event has been created by Nigel Sweet, operations manager at Leeds Golf Centre, who joined the senior circuit for the first time in 2016 after playing the game for 38 years and he hopes to make it an annual event.

Nigel urged anyone interested in playing in the pro am or in sponsor opportunities to get in touch: “I’m absolutely delighted that Leeds Golf Centre will play host in what will be the biggest event outside the European Seniors Tour. The European Seniors Tour only allows a 54-strong field.

“I know there is a still a huge appetite for playing against a 72-man field and can’t wait to see so many big names here this summer.”
