Luke Bonser wins the Durham Order of Merit

Luke Bonser topped the Durham County Golf Union’s Order of Merit for 2026 following an incredibly successful year in events across the county.

Consett & District-based Luke led the way with 1,095 points as Heworth’s Aaron Scott was second with 725 points, and Chris Brown (Castle Eden) was 75 points back in third place.

Luke ended the season with back-to-back wins in the Hartlepool and Consett scratch opens – having picked up big points in the Bishop Auckland Bowl with a third-place finish, Wearside’s scratch open (third), Ramside’s scratch open (second), and the Seaton Salver (third overall and leading Durham player).

“It’s an honour to add my name to the list of players on the Durham Order of Merit trophy; everyone on there is a county legend,” said Luke. “Winning the Order of Merit was a big goal this season and I’m really proud to have done it.

“It’s always a great feeling to win, whenever it comes, and ending the year with back-to-back victories to seal the points title was fantastic. The win at Hartlepool meant I couldn’t be caught at the top of the table, and that gave me the opportunity to really enjoy the round at Consett. To go on and win at home, in front of so many people who have supported me for a long time, was brilliant and I really enjoyed receiving the trophy at a club which is so special to me.

“Overall, I’m happy with my year. I would have loved to do a little better in some national events, but making the cut at the English Amateur was great.

“I’ve got a lot of positives to take from this year. I’ve learned a lot too, and that will help going forward.”

Luke is set to turn professional in January 2027 and has set his sights on progressing his golf career through the mini tour circuit in the UK.

“Winning right at the end of my amateur career is ideal and I’ll take a lot of confidence into the winter,” added Luke. “I was a bit of late bloomer as a junior and amateur, but the last few seasons have been very solid and I’m looking forward to developing my game as a professional.”
