Sandy Twynholm wins the Senior Men’s County Champion of Champions

Northumberland’s Sandy Twynholm lifted the Senior Men’s County Champion of Champions trophy at Woodhall Spa.

Morpeth Golf Club-based Sandy, who turned 60 in May and won the Northumberland seniors’ title for the second time earlier this year, shot rounds of 71 and 72 for a three under-par total and a two-shot win at the home of England Golf.

“It’s a great feeling to win a national title, I’m delighted,” said Sandy. “Woodhall Spa seems to suit my game and I was confident going in – so much so I packed my Scotland blazer, which hasn’t been out for a little while.

“A bit of experience in events like this really helped. I also knew staying out of the bunkers was key at Woodhall and a lot of three-woods off tees served me well. My putter was also great all weekend, particularly from long range.

“I also enjoyed it. I’m 60 now and I’m probably enjoying my golf more than ever. The expectations and pressure reduce over time, and for me it’s about making the most of these experiences. I still practice and play a lot, and really enjoy my team golf for my clubs and county. I’d say this is really the pinnacle for me at this stage in my golfing career.”

One of Northumberland’s most decorated amateur golfers, former Scotland international, 2004 county champion and seven-time county strokeplay champion Sandy led the field after the opening round and was the only player to shoot two rounds under par as he brought the trophy back to the North East. Meanwhile, Martin Farbrace (Kent) and Paul Newcombe (Devon) finished two shots back in a tie for second place.
