Planning for better performance

If you’re short on time when practising, having a proper plan which is written down will ensure you make the most of what you have available.

If you have half an hour to work on your game, maybe at lunchtime or when you’re on your way home from work, try focusing on three key areas of your short game for 10 minutes at a time.

Start with lag putts (eg from 30ft) on the putting green and track how many two putts you make.

Then work on one short shot (chipping, pitching or greenside bunkers) for 10 minutes, again tracking your performance (eg how many balls you get inside 6ft).

Finally, work on short wedge shots (30-75 yards) for 10 minutes, tracking how many you get within your target range (eg 10ft).

Following a plan, and tracking your performance, are the keys to improving – particularly when the time you have to work on your game is short and you need to get the most bang for your buck.

If you identify other areas to work on, you can cycle in other performance drills – such as hitting green-sized targets with a seven-iron, or mimicking finding a fairway with driver by simulating one on the driving range between two markers.
