Northern Golfer #50 – December 2016/January 2017

What a year it has been for golf in the North East and Yorkshire, with so many winners on the national stage. Consett & District Golf Club is the latest to taste national success with a magnificent victory in the Mail On Sunday Classic.

To come through so many matches and take the trophy is no mean feat and is the reason the team has made it on to the cover of our 50th edition.

Yorkshireman Danny Willett’s victory in The Masters kickstarted the 2016 season, three of the region’s golfers represented Europe in the Ryder Cup, Briony Bayles won the St Andrew’s Junior Ladies Open, and the success of Mat Webb on the national and international PGA circuit are just some of the highlights of the year.

Added to that, three of our courses – Longhirst Hall, Moor Allerton and Close House – hosted EuroPro Tour events, with Close House also announced as the host for the British Masters in 2017.

Graeme Storm and Chris Paisley retained their European Tour spots – the latter in dramatic fashion, and Marcus Armitage was promoted to the European Tour. Those are just a few of the highlights in what has proven a fantastic season for our region. You can relive the year with our feature from page 38.

The Northern Golfer team is proud to have been part of the region’s golfing scene for five years – producing 10 issues a year which means the one you are reading now is our 50th.

The magazine aims to provide as wide a range of news from juniors, mens, ladies and seniors across the North East and Yorkshire as possible, promoting at every opportunity the wonderful courses and facilities in the area.

We would like to thank those who have sent messages of support – and everyone who has advertised with us, sent us news, and taken part in interviews and photoshoots. Northern Golfer is your magazine and it is this support which has made it possible for us to produce 50 issues. We look forward to celebrating our centenary edition in 2021!
This is the last edition of the year and the first of 2017 so all that is left for us to do is wish you a Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and we’ll see you for issue 51 in February/March.
