Whitburn-based professional Stephen McNally lifted the Northumberland & Durham Open title at Prudhoe Golf Club as the North East & North West PGA welcomed an elite field of local pros and amateurs to compete for one of the region’s most prestigious trophies.
Stephen – who won his first NE/NW PGA tournament at the age of 63 after 46 years of membership – shot rounds of 70 and 66 for a two under-par total to add his name to the trophy, which was first played for in 1950.
Meanwhile, the wait goes on for an amateur to follow in the footsteps of Chris Paisley in 2009 and lift the trophy – Westerhope’s Cameron Thorburn leading the charge this year with a T5 finish.
The Northumberland & Durham Open was the first 36-hole event in this year’s Mizuno Order of Merit on the NE/NW PGA circuit, following the six-event Pro Series. With the win, worth double points, Stephen jumped 43 spots to fourth place as James Wilson held on to top spot. The next event in the order of merit is the Sunderland of Scotland Masters at Westerhope Golf Club on July 17.
