Maggie Whitehead overcame an elite field to win the Northumberland Junior Girls Strokeplay Championship at Whitley Bay Golf Club.
Maggie, a member of Close House and Ramside, shot rounds of 80 and 77 to lead the event, finishing ahead of Rosie Belsham on countback. In the nett event, Gosforth Park Ladies’ Libby Bell took home the trophy.
Maggie,13, said: “I’m really happy to have won the girls championship, particularly when there was such a strong field.”
Maggie, who has reduced her handicap to two following the event, played alongside Rosie and produced the highlight of the tournament with an eagle on the final hole to beat the England Girls international with the final putt of the day.
“I had no idea where we were in the tournament, but to pull off an eagle on the last hole to win on countback was an amazing feeling,” Maggie added. “I’m really happy with where my game is right now, I’ve played some very good golf this year and I’m looking forward to the rest of the summer.”
