Maggie Whitehead named in England’s World Junior Girls’ Championship team

A trio of top talents – including Close House and Ramside member Maggie Whitehead – will represent England at the World Junior Girls’ Championship in Canada.

Maggie, Sophia Fullbrook and Ellise Rymer will travel to Angus Glen Golf Club in Ontario to fly the flag for England at the under-18 event, which takes place October 10-15.

Maggie stepped up to help the combined men’s and women’s team win the Home Internationals in Ireland earlier this year, and featured for GB&I against continental Europe at the Junior Vagliano Trophy.

Sophia, from the Melbourne Club in Hertfordshire, earned her spot after winning the English Girls’ Under 18 Championship, while Sophia – from Lincoln Golf Club – starred as England’s joint boys’ and girls’ squad won the Home International Series, claiming five and a half points from a possible six.

England will join 17 other teams from around the world hoping to follow in the footsteps of defending champions South Korea.

Host nation Canada will field two teams with the following countries also represented: Austria, Belgium, Chinese Taipei, Colombia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and Wales.

The event was first staged in 2014 and last held in 2019, when England finished tied for fourth place after a strong showing from Annabell Fuller, Lily May Humphreys and Mimi Rhodes.
