Lancashire win The Big Six at Bishop Auckland

Lancashire will represent the north in the English Men’s County Finals after winning the Northern Counties Golf Union’s Men’s County Qualifying (AKA The Big Six) at Bishop Auckland Golf Club.

The Lancashire team – Luke Kelly (67-71), Matthew Lever (68-72), Ian Kenwright (71-73), Greg Holmes (72-68), Tom Hughes (73-73) and Andrew Haswell (74-74) – led the field with an eight under-par team total. They will go on to represent the north in the national finals at St Enodoc on September 26-28.

Meanwhile, hosts Durham finished second with a team total of one under-par, while Yorkshire finished third on five over-par in the 36-hole, six-player event in which all six scores from both rounds count towards the team total.

In the individual standings, Cheshire’s Laurent Beech (68-67) led the field with a nine under-par total, beating Cumbria’s Will Coxon (67-68) on countback with a better second round score. Durham’s Jamie Birkbeck (69-68) finished third on seven under-par.
