Northumberland Captains

Join the captains’ club

Following another successful season of matches and tournaments, The Society of Northumberland Golf Captains is inviting those who have served their clubs across the county to join the society.

Founded in 1977, today the society brings together more than 600 members from each club in Northumberland. It hosts two events for its members – a singles competition in May, which was won by Dunstanburgh Castle’s Keith Bowden this year; and a doubles event in August, which was won by Bamburgh Castle’s John Southern and John Woodman this season. It also arranges inter-county matches against 14-player teams from Durham, Liverpool, Manchester & District, and Edinburgh & Lothians. There is also a black-tie dinner each February.

“We have a saying among our members, and I think it rings true for all those who’ve done the job – you’re captain for a year and a past captain for life,” said the society’s 2024 captain Jim Renwick.

“You have such a busy year as club captain, then all of a sudden, it’s over. Our aim is to fill a little bit of that hole with events, matches and a dinner which celebrate the hard work every club captain does. Our dinner, which welcomes more than 200 guests every year, is a big highlight of that, but we also have a lot of competitive golf as well.

“At just £5 per year, the society is great value for money and offers so many opportunities to carry forward your year as captain of your club into the future. We have a new cohort of captains who can take up membership each year and while it’s great to spend time with those you’ve met through league matches and events, it’s also fantastic to spend time with those who’ve done the role many years ago and all those from different parts of the county.”
