James Trant wins the Yorkshire Order of Merit

Wetherby-based James Trant lifted the Yorkshire Order of Merit trophy following a successful season in the county-wide points race.

After 19 events, James topped the standings with 1,005 points as 2025 champion Richard Wheatley (Bradford) finished second with 826 points, and Daniel Thomas (Ilkley) finished third with 808 points.

James’ season included victory in the Chevin Trophy at Otley Golf Club as well as a runner-up finish in the Hawksworth Trophy at The Bradford Golf Club following a sudden-death playoff with Oliver Tasker. He also had a second-place finish in the Vardon Grip at Harrogate Golf Club, and a second-place finish in the Pannal Rosebowl.

“It’s a good feeling to win the Order of Merit, I’ve not won anything this big before,” said 24-year-old James. “I had some very strong results in a limited number of starts. The win at Otley, a course I really enjoy, was a real highlight.

“I was close at Pannal as well, just missing out after a mistake off the tee on the last hole. I played great at Bradford to get into the playoff too. Those two rounds, shooting seven under-par, were some of my best this season. While I didn’t win the playoff, it was great to be there with Ollie and I was really happy for him to win at his home club as I finished off the Order of Merit win.

“It’s been a good season overall,” added James. “I’ve been a lot more consistent and that’s thanks to my coach, Gareth Davies. While I haven’t had as many really low scores, I’ve been very solid throughout the year. The individual success has been great, and I’ve really enjoyed the opportunity to represent Yorkshire this season as well. Looking ahead, I’ll be doing my best to defend the Order of Merit, and I’d love to continue representing Yorkshire if I have the opportunity to do that next season.”
