Members of Hull Golf Club have celebrated the centenary of their course in Kirk Ella.
The club was founded in 1904 on land near Anlaby that encompassed the future Boothferry Park – where Hull City would make their home. However, the club moved locations following the First World War. Dr Alistair MacKenzie surveyed land in Kirk Ella and recommended the club make every effort to purchase it along with Kirk Ella Hall. Five-time Open champion James Braid later planned the layout.
On May 21, 1925 club captain Bruce Johnston teed off alongside founding members of the club and 1923 Open winner Arthur Havers.
“It was my privilege to play a ceremonial shot using the same cleek that founder Haggitt Colbeck used in 1904 and Mr Johnston used back in 1925,” said 2025 club captain Dave Monaghan. “The club has supported champion golfers and also caters for enthusiasts at all levels. It has a thriving ladies’ section and a group of very promising juniors. Notwithstanding the golf, the social events are enjoyed by many members and their guests. Long may this continue in this fantastic piece of Yorkshire.”
