The Hadrian League and Newcastle & District Golf League have unveiled a proposal to merge the two competitions.
If approved by the 24 clubs which compete in the two men’s inter-club scratch team competitions, the merger would streamline league golf in a large area of the North East – stretching across south-east Northumberland, North Tyneside, Newcastle, the Tyne Valley, and north Durham.
Following several months of meetings between representatives from both leagues, the two organisations have sent a detailed proposal – which can be viewed here – to all clubs for discussion ahead of a meeting in August.
The proposals include reducing the number of matches played by clubs – and the associated costs – particularly for the six clubs which have teams in both competitions. It also includes two potential formats for the new league – with three divisions and promotion and relegation or a drawn pot system with playoffs at the end of the season. There is also the potential for Newcastle & District Golf League clubs to participate in the Davison Cup – a five-player team knockout event which currently features clubs from the Hadrian and North Northumberland leagues.
