Three of our region’s most talented female golfers played key roles as England retained the Girls Home Internationals trophy.
Whitley Bay Golf Club’s Rosie Belsham, Gosforth Park Ladies’ Jess Baker and Carus Green’s Caitlin Whitehead were part of the successful Girls team which overcame Scotland, Wales and Ireland to win the title at Downfield Golf Club in Dundee.
On a dramatic final day against Ireland, which was shortened to just the singles session due to heavy rain, Jess won her game 3&1 and Rosie and Caitlin secured important halves as the match finished tied 3-3. England lifted the trophy having accrued two more points in their matches against Scotland and Wales.
On the opening day, England beat Wales 6-3 with Rosie and Caitlin teaming up to win their foursomes match in the morning before Jess won her singles match 5&3.
England then completed a convincing 8.5-0.5 win over Scotland on day two – Rosie and Jess winning their foursomes match 7&5 as Caitlin teamed up with Charlotte Heath to secure a 5&4 victory. All three girls won their matches in the afternoon singles.
England now have a chance to complete a clean sweep of Home Internationals when the men’s event is played at Lahinch on September 11-13. Hexham’s Matty Lamb will feature in the England team.
