England girls set for Portuguese challenge

Four members of the England girls’ squad, including Arcot Hall-based Rachel Gourley, will take part in the Portuguese International Ladies’ Amateur Championship January 26-29.

Following a disrupted season in 2021, the girls will get the chance to once again compete on foreign soil against the best players from around Europe.

The four players representing England Golf during the 72-hole strokeplay event at the Montado Golf Resort near Lisbon are – Rachel, Olivia Lee (Buckinghamshire), Patience Rhodes (Somerset) and Lottie Woad (Surrey).

Due to travel restrictions, English players could not compete in the 2021 event, which was won by France’s Lucie Malchirand. Since the championship started in 1954 there have been four English winners – Jeanne Bisgood won the inaugural event and her success was matched by Mickey Walker (1972), Kitrina Douglas (1983) and Bel Wardle (2018).
