Durham’s junior push

Durham’s involvement in England Golf’s two-year plan to get more young people involved in the sport has made an encouraging start.

Along with Cheshire, Lincolnshire and Somerset, Durham was asked to join the pilot project and Lee Dolby, England Golf’s young people manager, was impressed with Durham’s junior conference held at George Washington Hotel and Golf Club and backed by their newly formed Golf Development Group.

He said: “Durham has enormous commitment and enthusiasm for developing junior golf and involving more young people.”

Dolby, Mike Greener, Jason Budd and European Tour winner Graeme Storm were all in attendance to pass on their expertise to club representatives and to answer questions.

Greener, England Golf club support officer and coaching co-ordinator, said: “Durham is already deeply committed to growing junior golf. The county works closely with England Golf, the Golf Foundation and club PGA professionals on projects such as Girls Golf Rocks and HSBC Golf Roots activities, as well as running a successful and popular Junior Golf Tour, Race to Rockliffe and a coaching talent pathway.”
